The Pyramid is a winemaker’s darling of a vineyard. It is named for its steep, terraced front hill, but the whole place is rocky and rugged with spectacular views in every direction: Knights Valley to the east, Chalk Hill to the west and south, and Alexander Valley to the north. It’s a sprawling and unique site at the crux of three appellations, where steepness and exposure of the vineyard lead the Pyramid Single Vineyard Cabernet to be dark and intense every vintage.
In 2015, the Pyramid’s signature darkness and intensity is accompanied by the high tone fruit that seems to be the hallmark of the vintage. The aromatics are incredible: Santa Rosa plum, violets, baking chocolate. There’s no doubt this wine will improve with age – it should keep getting better until at least 2030- but it’s so compelling right now that there’s an argument to be made for breaking the neck off on the curb and drinking it in the parking lot.
