Here’s a gift that has it all in a single package: elegance, simplicity, and deliciousness. A single bottle of our 2013 Estate Cabernet packaged in a black gift box and finished with a red cloth bow. Robert Parker touts 2013 as a “game-changer” for California Cabernet, “in terms of the consistency, depth of quality, and across the board excellence.”
As Hawkes wine club member, you have exclusive access to our Single Vineyard Cabernets – the best of the best of what we do. I’d like to say I could still be friends with somebody even if they didn’t like red wine and olive oil, but it might be tough. These two things, along with electric guitars and old pickup trucks, are the cornerstones of my material existence.
In my house, we have given up using olive oil other than Hawkes Farm Extra Virgin. This oil isn’t cheap, but the flavor is so wonderful and intense that I feel like I’m getting more bang for the buck when I use it – partly in terms of flavor for dollar, but also in terms of flavor for waistline. The olives for this oil are grown here in Alexander Valley; they’re Tuscan varieties harvested early in the year, when they are still pretty green. The variety of olive and early harvest date give the oil a fresh, grassy, spicy character that you hardly ever find in supermarket olive oil. It gives everything you put it on, from pasta to salad an extra dimension of pungent olivey aroma and flavor.
Also included here is a bottle of our 2013 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2013 is the heart of the drought vintages – a time when historically dry weather produced historically great wine. It’s a blend of fruit from all three vineyards: Red Winery, Pyramid and Stone, a blend of about two dozen small lots harvested throughout the month of October. The nose is all fresh berries, ripe and lush, and the texture is soft and round on the mid palate, then dusty and long on the finish. Like many of my favorite Cabernets, there’s something paradoxical about it – it’s very powerful, but very delicate, as well. It’s this balance that makes it pair well with all sorts of holiday fair, from the baked ham to the prime rib. Lately, I’ve been drinking a lot of it with my huevos rancheros.
2013 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2014 Alexander Valley Merlot 2015 Home Chardonnay
one of each in kraft logo gift box
This quintessential trio of Hawkes wines is guaranteed to delight anyone on your list – a bottle of Home Chardonnay, Alexander Valley Merlot, and Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon – it’s also an amazing value.
This is a complete meal of wine pairings – pop the crisp, refreshing Home Chardonnay for the appetizer and salad course, then open the Merlot and Cabernet to pair with hearty mains. The contrast of the two reds makes for a fun tasting and conversation starter, but it also puts two different flavor profiles on the table, the combination of which should please everyone from the dainty sippers of lighter, leaner reds to those plaid-clad chuggers of oxblood visiting from the great northwest.
