Red Winery is the source of our first single-vineyard bottling in 2003. We’ve been farming it since 1973 and although the topography of the vineyard is fairly straightforward, it may be the trickiest of the three vineyards to farm. The soil at Red Winery is a jigsaw puzzle of clay, shale, and loam, which makes irrigation difficult to get just right; the weather is easy and mild enough that some years it doesn’t give the vines the stress they need to produce concentrated flavors. While the Stone and Pyramid Vineyards make rich, powerful wines every year, the strength of Red Winery lies in its subtlety. On a good year, it is elegant and balanced; in an off year, it’s thin. The 2003 is one of the best wines we have ever released, while we didn’t think the wine from 2007 was good enough to release at all.
