Pyramid, planted in 1995, is the young, rising star of the three vineyards we farm. It grows in the rugged hills between Chalk Hill and Knights Valley. We call it the Pyramid because many of the slopes on which the vineyard is planted are sharp and steep enough that the hills resemble pyramids. The soil is volcanic ash and obsidian from an eruption of Mount Saint Helena mixed with sedimentary stone driven up through the ground by seismic activity, reducing topsoil to a minimum. The vineyard is a knot of hills and ridges and swales, with exposure in nearly every direction. Weather of many sorts is brought to bare—cooling fog from the Russian River, ocean breezes, and the warmth of Alexander Valley. The terrain of the Pyramid is more varied than either the Stone or Red Winery Vineyards and, as a result, the lots of Cabernet made from individual blocks of the vineyard also show great diversity. Of these lots, we chose the one we thought most definitely embodied the element we prize in Pyramid Cabernet— intensity on every level from color to aroma to flavor to finish.
